Overview
The Psychiatric Nursing Department was founded in the 1990s and was managed by Ms. Mahin Yazdani, who holds a Master of Science in Psychiatric Nursing. In addition to teaching mental health nursing and mental illness nursing courses at the undergraduate level of nursing, the members of the department accepted the first course of students at the Master of Science in Psychiatric Nursing with the cooperation of Ms. Yazdani and Mr. Ebrahimi in 1999. The second course of student admission began in 2001 with the cooperation of Ms. Yazdani and Ms. Seyed Fatemi. The third course of admission of master's students of the department began in 2008 and has been ongoing since then. The department recruits an average of at least four students per course annually.
In addition to covering specialized courses in psychiatric nursing, this group covers courses related to psychology, mental health, and mental illness in most other undergraduate majors in the faculty. Also, members of this group collaborate in teaching PhD nursing courses, especially in qualitative research methods, mixed methods, andtheory development courses with the help of other faculty members in the faculty's educational departments, and are active in the clinical field in training and empowering nursing personnel.

In addition to guiding and advising theses in psychiatric nursing and other nursing master's degree programs, members of this group participate in guiding and advising PhD nursing dissertations and conducting research projects in collaboration with other faculty members in various departments of the faculty, university, and with other faculty members in universities in the country and even with other faculty members in different countries of the world.
Today, this group is one of the cornerstones of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, which, through excellence in education, research, and clinical practice, helps to improve, promote, and advance mental health care and the treatment of mental illnesses in various individuals in community. In addition to collaborating and participating in educational programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels, this group plays a fundamental role in the education and training of competent and efficient nurses. This group is committed to the training of nurses, especially efficient, competent, and responsive psychiatric nurses, by selecting outstanding students and providing a suitable environment for their flourishing.
The Department of Psychiatric Nursing program is comprehensive and community-oriented and encompasses a wide range of responsibilities including care, education, research, prevention, consultation, support, and management in various health, treatment, research, rehabilitation, and maintenance centers and settings. The department is a center for dynamic educational, research, and practice activities, and its faculty members are actively engaged in various fields of study.

We aspire to be a beacon of innovation and a driving force in the advancement of mental health and psychiatric nursing care, not only in our region but across the country, in the care of individuals, institutions, and diverse groups in community.
The Psychiatric Nursing Department intends to develop its capabilities through participation in national and internation workshops and seminars, writing scientific articles for national and international journals, and implementing effectively its educational, research, and clinical programs in the persons, family, hospitals, health centers, rehabilitation centers and community that related to the field of psychiatric nursing, so that it is among the top three psychiatry departments in the country at the national and regional levels. This department also intends to play an effective role in promoting the group, the faculty, and the university through logical and appropriate interaction with other faculty departments, research teams and centers, educational groups of other faculties and universities, and governmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), with the support of the university.

Mission
In full alignment with the overarching mission of the Tabriz University of Medical Sciences and Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, the main mission of this department is to educate and train nurses and psychiatric nurses who are knowledgeable, specialized, competent and professionally committed, efficient, responsible and accountable at three levels.
At the undergraduate level, the department trains students so that they can work as skilled nurses in mental health and psychiatric clinics and centers after graduation.
At the graduate level, the department has a mission to train and educate nursing students in the field of psychiatry to work in nursing schools as instructors and in clinics and centers at three different levels of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention in mental health, treatment, rehabilitation, and rehabilitation of individuals, families, and various social groups, people with mental disorders, and their families as master's degree psychiatric nurses. Acquiring skills in mental health and mental illness nursing, psychiatric nursing interventions in various types of personal, group, and family psychotherapy, as well as acquiring sufficient knowledge and preparation about various nursing and psychiatric nursing theories and research methods, are among the most important educational activities of graduate students.
At the doctoral level (PhD) in nursing, the department's mission is to educate students by teaching health and Nursing philosophy, qualitative research, quantitative research, and mixed methods research, teaching theory and theory development, and teaching management in nursing, and acquiring skills in a specialized field of nursing and psychiatric nursing, who will acquire sufficient knowledge and skills to work in nursing schools as faculty members, in research and technology centers as researchers and innovators, and in mental health and treatment centers as expert psychiatric nurses and nursing managers.
