History of Faculty
Picture this
:
Back in 1917, when the world was changing rapidly and healthcare was transforming, a group of visionary nursing leaders in our country knew something important – they understood just how crucial having a bachelor's degree would become for the nursing profession. But here's the thing – there wasn't a single four-year nursing program anywhere in our region!
So, what did they do?
They made history
. Right here in Tabriz – a city that's always been known as the "City of Firsts" in Iran – they established the very first nursing education institution in the entire country. In 1917, our faculty was born as an educational center within the American Mission Hospital, and what an incredible journey it has been ever since!
For over 50 years, from 1917 to 1971, we dedicated ourselves to training nursing students. Then, something wonderful happened – we merged with Tabriz University, bringing together our rich heritage with the strength of a major academic institution. And we didn't stop there! In 1966, we expanded our heart and our mission by launching our midwifery program, welcoming a whole new family of healthcare heroes into our community.
The winds of change
swept through our halls in 1976 when we completely revolutionized our old nursing education system, replacing it with a modern, university-level academic approach that would set the standard for nursing education across Iran. By 1986, we had grown even more, welcoming the Operating Room program from the Medical Faculty into our warm embrace.
But here's what makes us truly special – when medical sciences separated from Tabriz University in 1986 and Tabriz University of Medical Sciences was born; we became the heart of something even bigger. Students and faculty from the Razi Complex joined our growing family, and together we officially became the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery.
We love being pioneers!
In 1995, we made history again by launching Iran's very first PhD program in nursing – imagine being the first to open that door for advanced nursing research in our entire country! How exciting is that?
Fast forward to 2014, and we kept innovating by introducing our Master's program in Midwifery Counseling. We also transformed our graduate programs, turning our four specialized Master's tracks (Medical-Surgical Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, and Community Health Nursing) into four distinct, focused programs that better serve our students and communities.
Today, we're absolutely thriving!
Our big, beautiful academic family includes:
685 undergraduate students studying across three programs (Nursing, Midwifery, and Operating Room)
160 Master's students in 8 different specializations – 6 in nursing fields (Medical-Surgical, Pediatric, Psychiatric, Community Health, and Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing) and 2 in midwifery (with exciting tracks in Midwifery Education, Reproductive Health, Community-Oriented Midwifery, Management, and our newest addition, Midwifery Counseling)
44 PhD students in nursing, continuing our tradition of advancing the science of nursing
From a small beginning in 1917 to becoming Iran's leading nursing and midwifery faculty with over
100 years of excellence
– that's not just our history, that's our legacy of caring, innovating, and always moving forward together. Every single day, we're writing new chapters in this amazing story, and
we can't wait for you to be part of what comes next!
Ready to become part of our incredible century-long story of excellence, innovation, and caring?
