Highlights of labor risk management workshop

On July 1, 2020, a workshop on risk management in childbirth was held under the auspices of Dr. Esmat Mehrabi, assistant professor of midwifery at the Clinical Skills Center of Al-Zahra Hospital, with the participation of fourth-semester Ph.D. students from 8 a.m. to 13 p.m. The workshop was held with adherence to the principles of Covid-19 prevention and keeping social distance.

At the beginning, Dr. Mehrabi mentioned the goals of the workshop and the importance of reducing maternal mortality in accordance with the goals of sustainable development by 2030, and gave a brief overview of the latest report of the Ministry of Health on the numbers and causes of maternal mortality in Iran. And finally, The World Health Organization's definitions of maternal mortality, the most common causes of it and ten important recommendations of the Maternal Health Administration to reduce the maternal mortality rate was reviewed.

Then, Dr. Shamsi Abbas Alizadeh, Associate Professor of Perinatology and Associate Professor of Gynecology, explained in detail the management of one of the most common causes of maternal mortality (nasal hemorrhages from the birth canal lacerations) and finally answered questions about the best ways to repair different types of lacerations in labor.

Dr. Niloufar Sattarzadeh, Director of the Department of Midwifery and Associate Professor of the Department, presented theoretical and practical issues related to one of the most important challenges during childbirth (shoulder dystocia and umbilical cord prolapse) and its management methods and a detailed description of possible problems. It is worth mentioning that Dr. Sattarzadeh is one of the best teachers of physiological delivery in Iran. Then Dr. Roghayeh Nourizadeh, Assistant Professor of Midwifery, presented the topic of postpartum hemorrhage management and updated topics in accordance with Uptodate 2020 articles. Also, the FIGO 2017 protocol on how to prescribe prophylactic and therapeutic misoprostol for postpartum hemorrhage was described.
In the end, an overview of the issues related to postpartum hemorrhage management methods was offered based on the Maternal Health Care Booklet (Third
Review) which was provided by the Ministry of Health. Below you could see some pictures of this workshop.
